Bebe Flight Is Making Sure Indie Artists Are Ready!
There’s a difference between knowing how to talk and knowing how to communicate. If you ever have the chance to spend a little time with entertainment journalist, producer, media personality and now author Bebe Flight..... you will quickly understands the difference.
Flight stopped by The Play It Cool Show to discuss her new book, The Indie Artist Media Playbook, but what started as a conversation about the book became something much bigger: a conversation about music, journalism, branding, and the changing relationship between artists and media.
I have to admit, this interview was particularly fun for me. Bebe and I operate on different sides of a very similar world, and she came prepared. Every question was met with intention, which turned the conversation into a friendly battle of the wits between two media people who know the road. I loved every minute of it.
One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was examining what an interview is actually supposed to accomplish. Anybody can ask ten questions, but a good interviewer is trying to create a moment, a story, and leave understanding the person sitting across from them.
That experience eventually helped inspire The Indie Artist Media Playbook, a book that is part guide, part workbook and, maybe most importantly, part mentor for artists who haven't yet learned how to navigate the media side of the music business.
Several ideas from the book immediately stood out to me.
“Understand that interviews are collaborations.”
“Do not mistake access for friendship.”
"Your talent may get you in the room, but your professionalism gets you invited back.
We also tackled a question that media people like us can't avoid in 2026. Artists have TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, podcasts and direct access to their fans. They can announce their own projects, tell their own stories and potentially reach millions without ever sitting across from a journalist.
So… do artists still need us? Yea we even went there.
We also made time to have some fun.
I put Bebe's media instincts to the test with a game of CRISIS: an artist says something offensive; a three-year-old record suddenly explodes..... What happens next?
No prepared statement. No PR team whispering the answer.
Just: Bebe, what do we do?
Her answers reinforced the larger point of our conversation. Making the music is only one part of being an artist. Eventually you're going to have to explain yourself, promote yourself, AND EVEN MORE IMPORTANT.... protect yourselF.
That's where media training matters.
