Besides the smells of summer, the month of June also holds the importance of Black Music Month. It's not only a time to celebrate the sounds, stories, and soul of Black artists but also a culture that keeps growing. But where did it come from? Why do we celebrate it? And why does it matter now more than ever?
The Origins: Born from Pride, Built for Recognition
Black Music Month was officially recognized in June of 1979, thanks to the advocacy of genius Kenny Gamble (of the iconic Gamble & Huff duo), broadcast executive Ed Wright, and radio legend Dyana Williams. These cultural changemakers believed that Black music, its artistry, influence, and economic power, deserved national acknowledgment. That same year, President Jimmy Carter hosted the first celebration at the White House, giving the movement real political and cultural weight.
21 years later President Bill Clinton would issue a formal proclamation solidifying June as Black Music Month., and the presidential support wouldn’t stop there. In 2009, President Barack Obama expanded it, renaming it African-American Music Appreciation Month—but let’s be real, in the streets and the studios, it’s still Black Music Month.
Now let’s discuss its purpose. BMM honors the artists who built genres from scratch. The blues, jazz, gospel, R\&B, hip-hop, soul, house, funk, reggae, go-go, and much more are all celebrated. It’s about recognizing how Black creators have shaped not just American music, but global culture.
This month is a reminder that Black music isn’t a “moment. Create playlists, spotlight unsung heroes, or maybe sit with an album and let it really speak to you. However you choose to celebrate—make it intentional. Make it loud. Make it Black.
I took the time to design a 30 day music challenge where each day you and I will pair a mood or moment with an amazing song from our culture. Below is the template used for your Instagram stories along with the full 30 day song topic list. Feel free to copy the image and share your songs!!!
